Travertine vs marble: which is right for your table?

Travertine and marble are the two stones people most often weigh against each other when planning a custom piece. Both are natural limestone relatives, both age beautifully, and both have anchored important rooms for centuries. But they look different, feel different, and live differently in a home. Here is how to choose.

The look

Marble is defined by veining: mineral rivers that run through a polished field, from the soft gray webbing of Bianco Carrara to the dramatic purple fractures of Calacatta Viola. It reads refined, cool, and classical.

Travertine is defined by texture and banding. Formed in mineral springs, it carries natural pitting and layered movement that read warm, organic, and ancient. Where marble impresses, travertine relaxes.

Durability and daily life

Both stones are porous and both appreciate coasters and prompt attention to spills. Marble shows etching from acids like wine and citrus more visibly on polished surfaces. Honed finishes, which we use on most pieces, hide daily life far better than high polish.

Filled and honed travertine, the standard for our travertine pieces, is smooth to the touch and quite forgiving. Its natural texture and tonal variation camouflage small marks in a way pale polished marble cannot.

Care

The care routine is the same for both: seal the stone every 6 to 12 months, wipe spills promptly, use coasters and trivets, and clean with mild soap and a soft cloth. Neither stone is difficult. They simply ask for the same respect you would give a fine wood table.

Price

Travertine is generally the more accessible stone. In our library, Beige Travertine anchors the value end while rare marbles like Italian Calacatta Viola sit at the top. The same piece can vary meaningfully in price depending on stone choice, which is why the Studio shows you a live estimate as you switch stones.

So which one?

Choose marble when you want veining, contrast, and a piece that reads polished and precious. Choose travertine when you want warmth, texture, and a piece that feels organic and grounded. If you are torn, order the same form in the Studio in both stones and compare the estimates and the look side by side. And remember that before we fabricate anything, you approve a photo of the exact slab.
